Meet Claire – South Australia

An inspiring Athlete……

Claire is SA’s top triathlete for two years running. She has just competed in the 70.3 World Championships in South Africa.

“Make an effort not an excuse!”

Here’s her story…

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a 29yr old living as close to the beach as I can in metro Adelaide. I work as a Registered nurse at the WCH. I don’t allow dust to settle on me as I love to lead a very active, social lifestyle. I’m passionate about friends, family, travel, music and food. I take every opportunity to be outdoors and love trying new things!!

What makes you feel alive / What fills your soul?

Being active outdoors. I mostly love warmer weather and the one thing that makes me feel alive without fail is riding a wave in perfect surf conditions. Nothing beats it!!

Do you currently play other sports?

I currently dedicate most of my leisure time to swimming, cycling and running for triathlons but have enjoyed a few other sports growing up. Played netball for about 18yrs and have dabbled in touch footy and tennis. I love to surf for leisure and am a keen snowboarder when I can get close to the snow.

What are your biggest sporting achievement to date?

Netball premierships are hard to come by and nothing beats sharing that special moment with team mates/ friends.

Winning the SA Open Womens Tri SA state series 2017-18 and 2018-  2019 is also a feather in my cap.

Finishing an Ironman 70.3

Qualifying and competing in Ironman 70.3 Age Group World Championships in Port Elizabeth South Africa

What has been your most memorable race to date?

I think my first Murrayman half Ironman distance triathlon at Barmera is probably my most memorable. Nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment when you have doubts about finishing a race!! That feeling is the thing that keeps me going back for more.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced with your sporting life and how did you overcome it?

Probably facing the biggest challenge at the moment in balancing work and training commitments. I have learnt to become organised and motivated and to treasure every minute of the day.

What type of bike do you ride?

I currently ride a very sleek Cervelo P3 TT bike. I also have a roadie.

Do you like to match your kit to your bike?

If I had all the money in the world I would probably consider being matchy matchy but I do admire those that are superbly coordinated!!

Your dream place to compete that would fill your soul?

Anywhere new. I love the excitement of seeing somewhere for the first time and to race there is just a bonus. Locally would love to race in Cairns. Hawaii would also be pretty awesome and the London or New York Marathons would be pretty amazing. Too many!!!

What are you currently training for?

Currently training for the Ironman 70.3 Age Group World Championships in Port Elizabeth South Africa

Whats your favorite meal to fuel your training?

Tacos I think!! Never get sick of them

What your favorite indulgence food? Everything in moderation right!

I have to say I rarely go a day without chocolate and am a bit of a sweet tooth but I also can’t go past toasted bread/ crumpets etc

Do you have a favorite café/restaurant ?

I love Oscars at Mclaren Vale. Their Idaho pizza is an absolute winner and my go to every time!!

Your favorite holiday destination?

I don’t know I can pick a favorite!! My top 5 would probably go something like Switzerland, Croatia, Anywhere in Central America, Canada, Ireland.

What advice would you give someone to live a soul full life?

Make an effort not an excuse. There is so much time in a day to do something meaningful whether it be for yourself or for someone else all it takes is a little motivation!

Who inspires you?

Day to day I’m actually inspired by the people I meet through my work. It makes me appreciate my health and how lucky I am to be able to lead an active lifestyle. On a bigger level I am inspired by those that show commitment, drive, determination and a little bit of craziness…with no excuses or regrets. Those that train harder than I do because I know the effort it takes to achieve that!!

Do you have any sponsors you would like us to mention?

Bicycle Express, Irwin Wheels Oceania, 32GI Aus
